Sherlock Holmes

On the one hand, the works of Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle (DL) on the matter of Sherlock Holmes need no introduction. On the other hand, one can go on and on.

So let's skip all that. The tables shown below contain data: links to the original text of Doyle's four Holmes novels and to his 56 Holmes short stories, to the baker's dozen of the Basil Rathbone (KBE, MC, Kt) movies based thereto, and to many other complete movies or videos of the stories.

R/O Reginald Owen1933
A/W Arthur Wontner1932
B/R Basil Rathbone1939
R/H Ronald Howard1954
D/W Douglas Wilmer1965
P/C Peter Cushing1968
J/B Jeremy Brett1984
Each row of the table contains a section title or one such story. The table is divided into eight sections: Doyle's novels, Doyle's five anthologies of short stories (most featuring Jeremy Brett),, the Basil Rathbone movies, and the Ronald Howard movies (the latter two groups which are only loosely based on Doyle's work yet which did much to establish the popular Holmes character).

The first column of each of the story rows contains a link to Doyle's original text of the story, and the second column contains a link to the Wikipedia (W) entry for said story (which are often interesting in their own right). The remaining columns contain the links to 93 currently web-available movie and TV show versions of the stories, encoded according to the actor starring as Holmes, per the table shown to the upper right.

Another 11 versions I've found, from 1912 to 1944, are listed after the table.

Other Versions

  • This is the oldest Holmes I've been able to find on the Internet. Produced in 1912, it is the only surviving episode of the first officially authorized series of Holmes films, produced under the direct supervision of Conan Doyle. Here's The Copper Beeches (in two parts) starring Georges Treville as Holmes. This is, of course, a silent film.

  • Here are three episodes from 1921 starring Eille Norwood as Holmes: The Man With The Twisted Lip, The Devil's Foot, and The Dying Detective. These too are silent films.

  • Here's a 1931 version of The Speckled Band starring Raymond Massey as Holmes. This version features an unusual "front- office" at 221 Baker Street, which highlights the emerging punched- card processing machines, dictaphones, and inter- office intercom of that time.

  • Here are four episodes, from 1931 through 1937, featuring Arthur Wontner as Holmes: The Sleeping Cardinal, The Sign of Four (included above), The Triumph of Sherlock Holmes (derived from Doyle's The Valley of Fear, this version is unfortunately of low quality), and Murder At The Baskervilles (derived from Doyle's Silver Blaze).

  • Here's a 1949 version of The Speckled Band, this one featuring Alan Napier (later famous for his role as Alfred in Batman). This one was originally created as a pilot for a series of Holmes shows, but it ended up becoming a one-off episode for the Lucky Strike sponsored Your Show Time series.

  • Lastly, to finish with a twist, here's a 1944 parody version of The Case of the Screaming Bishop, produced by Columbia Phantasy Cartoons and featuring Hairlock Combs and his assistant Gotsome, of 223 Baker St.
